Living Gluten Free in New Brunswick

Relish Gourmet Burgers has gluten free buns available.  I haven’t been to this restaurant but all the hype on the internet says they are very good.  Worth a try! Reminder … please verify that everything else that goes on the bun is gluten free.  At the moment they have locations in Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton and Oromocto for the folks in New Brunswick, Halifax and Antigonish in Nova Scotia, and St. John’s Newfoundland. ㋡

UPDATE (March 5, 2012) – I can’t believe it took me this long to give them a try but we finally made it to the Moncton location on Saturday.  It’s confirmed that the Fries are NOT Gluten Free.  When i asked them about the burger toppings I was told that the only Burger NOT GF would be the Big Texas because of the “crispy onion frites”.  I had the L.A. is my Lady™ with Sliced avocado, roasted peppers, basil pesto and creamy goat`s cheese and I really enjoyed it.  My mom had the The Simpleton™ with Lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic mayo and relish (don’t worry, I kept the Simpleton jokes to myself…well until now 😉 Sorry Mom)

Update (May 28th, 2012) – The new Country Naturals Cold Cuts & Deli Meats now indicate Gluten Free on the packaging

Maple Leaf Natural Selections and Schneiders Country Naturals have deli meats that contain no preservatives, artificial or Gluten containing ingredients.  The label does not contain the dreaded “Made in a facility that …”, nor is it labeled as Gluten Free.  Maple Leaf Foods claim that they always list the top 9 allergens if present in a product, and always put “May Contain…” if there is any contact with these allergens.  So don’t forget to always read the labels before purchasing just in case something has changed.

Good News!

Kellogg’s now has a Gluten Free Rice Krispies cereal.  I am not sure where it is available yet but the link is Canadian.  If you don’t see it on the shelves of your favourite grocery store please ask when it will be available.

OCTOBER 19, 2016 … UPDATE:  Yesterday I went shopping for Glucosamine and discovered that Equate brand is now maked as having ‘No Gluten’.  But it is best to read labels before buying because in one store it was not marked.  It is good to see that they have improved their product by not adding gluten.

WARNING … Equate brand Glucosamine & Chondroitin with MSM

A little reminder for those of you who may be gluten sensitive or Celiac.  Try to avoid  buying products that do not say “Gluten-Free” on the label.  I was sick over Christmas with symptoms of having been in contact with gluten but knew I hadn’t eaten anything containing it.  The only thing I had taken that was new was EQUATE brand Glucosamine & Chondroitin with MSM.  Finally got a call back from Walmart … it contains gluten and it does not say it on the label. Sometimes you don’t save when you buy cheap…I ended up paying in the end. ㋡

UPDATE – Now Available in Canada

Betty Crocker have released two of their Gluten Free Mixes in Canada; Devils Food and Golden Cake Mixes.  I’ve seen them at the Co-Op on Mapleton Rd. in  Moncton.  This is great news, General Mills is making great strides in the Canadian market, first GF Chex and now this.

Please sign this petition to Bring Gluten Free Betty Crocker to Canada.

The mixes are very good and are priced better than the other gluten free mixes that are available.  The Gluten Free Betty Crocker products are made in Canada so why can’t we purchase them here?  Maybe if we get enough signatures on the petition they will realize there is a market for these products here in Canada.

Thank you for signing the petition!  ㋡

Udi’s products are now available at Atlantic Superstore in Atholville, Bathurst and Moncton in the frozen section.  Sobeys in Bathurst and Moncton has the fresh Udi’s bread, muffins, cinnamon rolls, pizza crust, hamburg buns, hotdog buns, and bagels.  At the store in Bathurst I think it may have been frozen before though because it was very cold to the touch when I was there last week.  The best gluten free bread that you can actually eat without toasting….just warm it up a wee bit in the microwave and it is yummy.  Things are looking up for us Celiacs!  ㋡

Sobeys & Atlantic Superstore in Campbellton have CHEX cereal.  Honey Nut Chex and Rice Chex are the only ones available in Canada at the moment.  My favourite is Cinnamon Chex…hopefully coming soon to Canada also.  It is a beginning!  ㋡

* Also available at Walmart in Bathurst and Moncton.

Gluten Free Panty Brown Rice Pancake & Waffle Mix

Today was “Pancake Day“.  I thought, ummm sounds good, so I dug out my box of Glutino Pancake Mix (which is now Gluten Free Pantry Brown Rice Pancake & Waffle Mix).  After they were cooked I topped with butter, syrup and sliced strawberries.  Yummy!   If you haven’t already tried this mix, I highly recommend it.  ㋡

Covered Bridge Potato Chip Company chips are manufactured locally in Waterville, NB and are entirely Gluten-Free.  The Smokin’ Sweet Barbecue Russet Potato Chips are the best in my opinion.  I have not yet tried all the flavours but so far they have all been very good…and they are Gluten-Free…definitely worth a try.  ㋡

This is an interesting link to Gluten Free Baking Mix Recipes.

Since Betty Crocker is a General Mills company there are not only recipes for Dessert Mixes but also for Chex Cereal.  Some very interesting recipes!  Enjoy!  ㋡
